I see! Thanks, it does appear to be the culprit. I’d never encountered one, but I quite like the Wikipedia-mentioned notion that southern fisher-folk may opt to grow orchard of them just to draw on bait caterpillars.
I am left to wonder, however, how this one found its way into the particular front yard in which I stumbled across it.
Does it move? Does it have a whip-like tentacle? Does it spit venom? You either have a Triffid or something Lovecraftian from the Outer Spheres. Either way I’d leave it alone.
Looks like a Northern Catalpa. Also known as a “cigar tree.”

I have the same tree in my front yard! Apparently they are all over ontario.
So strange, I must have seen them multiple times but I’ve never noticed the pod people formations before. Definitely not something I’ve seen up north.
